Medical Research Saved This Man’s Life

Rafael Zaklad went from a two-year prognosis to having a non-detectable PSA. Research and medicine funded by the Prostate Cancer Foundation have continued to keep Rafael alive and well.

When Rafael Zaklad was first diagnosed with prostate cancer, his prognosis was startling. At the time of his diagnosis it was predicted that his survival would be two years. Yet, more than a decade later Rafael is alive, and his prostate cancer is non-detectable. This sounds like a miracle, and in some ways, it is. But the real heroes in Rafael’s story are all of the amazing researchers, doctors, and donors who make clinical trials possible.

Under the care of PCF-funded researcher Dr. Scott Tagawa of Weill Cornell Medicine, Rafael has participated in multiple clinical trials – including one funded by PCF – that have extended his life.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation has developed a Clinical Trials Finder to help patients find clinical trials that they may be able to join.

Rafael is a true example that funding research saves lives. The therapies that have extended Rafael’s life, including the drug he is still on today, are all the result of brilliant researchers working together to defeat cancer. PCF is proud to have funded the drug that continues to treat Rafael, and we are especially proud of Scott Tagawa and all of the researchers in the PCF network that have made stories like Rafael’s possible.

We want more stories like Rafael’s, and together we can make that happen. Consider donating to PCF to fund more life-saving research.
