Prostate Cancer Research gets Huge Boost from New York and California Taxpayers
The Prostate Cancer Foundation Leads Successful First-Ever Tax Donation Campaign, Raising More Than $860,000 for Research Centers in NY and CA

SANTA MONICA, Calif., July 27, 2005 – During the 2004 tax season, Californians and New Yorkers were able to donate, for the first time, directly to prostate cancer research on their state income tax returns. These taxpayer donations will support leading research institutions in California and New York through a competitive grant program in which awards will be made by a multidisciplinary panel of peer reviewers.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) program, Fund the Research; Find a Cure, is a public education campaign that encourages Californians and New Yorkers to give to prostate cancer research throughout the tax season on their state tax forms. Through this program, the PCF helped generate $224,000 in the state of New York, with more than 20,000 people donating and $188,000 in the state of California. In New York, the amount raised actually becomes $672,000 since both the State of New York and the PCF will match the dollars, increasing the total 2004 revenue to more than $860,000.

One in six men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime – making it the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer in the United States. A new case occurs every two and a half minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 17 minutes. This successful new tax program will help stimulate new research opportunities to help find a cure for prostate cancer.

“This year, nearly 40,000 Californians and New Yorkers will be diagnosed with prostate cancer,” said Leslie D. Michelson, CEO, Prostate Cancer Foundation. “It is a little known fact that a man is one-third more likely to get prostate cancer than woman is to get breast cancer. Donating on tax forms is an easy and effective medium to generate donations that will help fund research to find a cure. The PCF would like to thank all Californians and New Yorkers who made an effort to donate this past tax season.”
