Griffey's 500th Career Home Run Caps PCF Home Run Challenge

ST. LOUIS, June 20, 2004 - Ken Griffey Jr. moved into the record books on Father's Day with his 500th home run - his second PCF Home Run Challenge (HRC) blast of the year and his seventh career-HRC home run. Griffey, who hit his 499th home run in an earlier HRC game, was joined in the home run derby by teammate Jason LaRue in a 6-0 victory over the Cardinals.

Thome Blast Two Home Runs to Win 2004 HRC Crown

KANSAS CITY - Jim Thome hit two home runs in an 8-2 Philadelphia Phillies win over the Kansas City Royals, giving the first baseman four PCF Home Run Challenge home runs for the year. Thome, who has played for the Phillies and the Cleveland Indians, has now hit eight career HRC home runs.

Yankees Smack Three Home Runs But Lose to Dodgers

LOS ANGELES, June 20, 2004 - The New York Yankees' Jason Giambi and the Dodgers' Shawn Green each hit their seventh career PCF Home Run Challenge home runs, and the Dodgers prevailed over the Yankees 5-4 in the concluding game of the first regular-season series between the two long-time rivals. Hideki Matsui and Miguel Cairo also hit home runs for the Yankees.

Pirates Blast Angels with Four Home Runs

ANAHEIM, June 17, 2004 -- Shortstop Jack Wilson hit a game-winning solo blast in the 7th inning to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 5-2 win over the Anaheim Angels. Wilson was followed three batters later by catcher Tike Redmon's first of two home runs. Third baseman Rob Mackowiak gave the Pirates an early lead with a solo shot in the fourth inning. Major League Baseball players hit 11 home runs in Thursday's PCF Home Run Challenge games, bringing this year's total to 66.

Pinch-Hit Home Run Seals Mariners' Fate

SEATTLE, June 16, 2004 - The Milwaukee Brewers' Billy Hall hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run to lead the Brewers to a 4-1 win over the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners only run came on a solo blast by catcher Pat Borders. During the Prostate Cancer Foundation's Home Run Challenge (HRC), which ends on Father's Day, fans nationwide contribute from $1 up to $10,000 for each home run hit during 60 selected games, all of which is used to fund prostate cancer research. Major League Baseball players have already hit 56 HRC home runs this year.

Blake's 9th Inning Smash Leads Tribe to Victory

NEW YORK, June 16, 2004 - Second baseman Casey Blake hit his ninth home run of the year, capping a 9-1 Cleveland Indians' victory over the New York Mets. The Indians have hit four HRC home runs this year, second only to the Chicago Cubs, who have hit seven.

MLB Players Hit 5 Home Runs; Week's Total at 53

June 15, 2004 -- Major League Baseball players have hit 53 home runs during the first five days of the Prostate Cancer Foundation's Home Run Challenge (HRC). Fans nationwide contribute from $1 up to $10,000 for each home run hit during 60 selected games, all of which is used to fund prostate cancer research.
In Tuesday night's action, Alfonso Soriano and Herbert Perry hit home runs for the Texas Rangers in an 11-inning, 5-4 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. In the other HRC game, Lew Ford and Torii Hunter hit two-run blasts for the Minnesota Twins in an 8-2 victory over the Montreal Expos. Expos second baseman Jose Vidro also hit a two-run shot.

Cubs' Walker Slams Two HRC Blasts in 7-2 Victory"

HOUSTON, June 14, 2004 -- Chicago Cubs' second baseman Todd Walker hit two solo home runs, the first of which helped chase future Hall of Fame pitcher Roger Clemens, in a 7-2 victory over the Houston Astros. Walker, who is the PCF Home Run Challenge leader with three home runs this year, was joined in hitting home runs by teammates Moises Alou and Aramis Ramirez.

CLEVELAND, June 13, 2004 - Ken Griffey Jr. slugged his 499th home run - and his sixth career PCF Home Run Challenge (HRC) blast - Sunday afternoon as his team fell to the Cleveland Indians 10-8. Griffey's home run was one of five home runs hit in the game: The Indians' Matt Lawton hit a two-run shot as the Indians rallied from a six-run deficit; Omar Vizquel hit his second HRC blast of the year; and Coco Crisp and Wiley Mo Pena each hit a home run.

Piazza Hits 8th HRC Blast

KANSAS CITY, June 13, 2004 - Mike Piazza broke a scoreless tie with a two-run shot that led the New York Mets to a 5-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. For Piazza, it was his 14th home run of the year and his eighth HRC blast, placing him in a tie for fourth on the all-time HRC home run list. The HRC home run leader is the Oakland A's Eric Karros, who has hit 15 HRC home runs.

Bonds & Palmiero Lead Home Run Attack

BALTIMORE, June 12, 2004 -- In an historic battle between two of Major League Baseball's (MLB) greatest power hitters, Barry Bonds hit his 675th career home run, and his 8th Home Run Challenge (HRC) blast, and Rafael Palmiero hit two home runs, bringing his MLB career total to 537. The San Francisco Giants defeated the Baltimore Orioles 9-6 in 11 innings during the first game of a doubleheader that was rain delayed from the night before.

Mateo & Byrnes Blast Two Each

OAKLAND, June 12, 2004 -- Ruben Mateo slammed two home runs for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Eric Byrnes smacked two for the Oakland Athletics as the A's won a 12-11 slugfest. Byrnes home runs were his third and fourth career HRC blasts, while Mateo's were his first.

Dodgers and Red Sox Power Four Home Runs

BOSTON, June 12, 2004 -- The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox combined for four home runs in the second game of an historic series that pitted two of Major League Baseball's oldest teams against each other for the first time. Jason Werth, Juan Encarnacion and Olmedo Saenz all homered for the Dodgers in a 14-5 victory, while Manny Ramirez hit one, his 17th of the season, for the losing team.

Yanks, Rockies Hit Four HRC Home Runs

NEW YORK, June 10, 2004 - Todd Helton, Luis Gonzalez and Choo Freeman each hammered home runs for the Colorado Rockies in an inter-league game against the New York Yankees preceding the PCF 2004 Home Run Challenge (HRC). Unfortunately, for the Rockies, Yankees catcher John Flaherty smacked a 6th-inning grand slam home run that led the Yanks to a 10-4 victory over their National League opponent. Helton's third inning blast was his 10th of the year and his eighth career HRC home run.

Hinske Trumps Dye in Blue Jays Win

OAKLAND, June 4, 2004 - Jermaine Dye's third-inning solo home run gave the Oakland A's an early lead against the Toronto Blue Jays in a Home Run Challenge (HRC) bonus game Friday night. Unfortunately, for the A's, Eric Hinske's solo blast in the 8th inning broke a low-scoring tie game and led to a 6-1 rout for the Blue Jays. Hinske's blast was his first HRC home run, while Dye connected on his second.

Boone's Blast Breaks

SEATTLE, June 5, 2004 - Bret Boone blasted a one-out, two-run blast to break a 2-2 tie and lead the Seattle Mariners to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox in a bonus game preceding the Home Run Challenge (HRC) Saturday night. Boone, who has 231 career home runs in a 12-year career playing for the Mariners, Cincinnati Reds, San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves, has now hit two HRC home runs. The blast was the first this year hit into Safeco Field's upper left-field deck.

Vizquel Leads Indians with 2-Run Blast

ANAHEIM, June 6, 2004 - Light-hitting Cleveland Indians shortstop Omar Vizquel, who has hit only 62 home runs in a 15-year career, smacked a two-run shot to help the Indians shut down the Anaheim Angels 7-0. Vizquel's home run, the second HRC blast in his career, came in an HRC bonus game on Sunday in Angels Stadium. |
