Prevent tumors from communicating with each other to spread

A new study on tumors that have metastasized — that is, spread to other parts of the body from the prostate through the bloodstream — seeks to learn if these cells are “reenergized” by cycling back to the primary prostate tumors.

If this assumption is correct — that they do indeed strengthen each other — it could have a profound effect on patient survival. Clinical trials designed to stop this “partnership” would likely begin within two years.

Burn away tumors with gold nanoparticles

One PCF-funded scientist is researching a new treatment that holds great promise of healing and rapid recovery. By introducing gold nanoparticles intravenously into a prostate cancer tumor — and then heating them with harmless sound waves — the malignancy was burned away with almost no harm to the surrounding cells.  

Biggest breakthrough in 60 years!

In extensive clinical tests, the oral pill abiraterone continues to show tremendous promise. It shrank the most dangerous tumors in up to 70% of cases by blocking testosterone production — the “fuel” prostate cancer needs to grow.

If results hold up, the drug could be approved as early as 2011, pending results of ongoing clinical trials.
