Everyday Hero: Terry Cummings, Rio Verde Country Club – Rio Verde, Arizona
On March 2, the Rio Verde Country Club hosted its second annual Arnie’s Army Golf Tournament in support of prostate cancer research. Raising close to $20,000, the event included a “closest to the pin” golfing-skills competition and an auction which offered various vacation packages and prizes to the highest bidder.
Tournament organizer and prostate cancer survivor, Terry Cummings, 65, was pleased with the tournament’s turn-out, as the benefit was also an opportunity to spread awareness for a disease he’s all too familiar with.
During the auction portion of the fundraiser, Cummings even placed a day with his beloved 1953 T-bird convertible up for bid.
“Funding cancer research is a very worthy cause,” says Terry. “Certainly, when it comes to prostate cancer, this is a disease that seems to impact many men in my particular age group, 55 to 75. Being a survivor now for eleven years, I was happy we all were able to raise the amount we did.”
Terry and the Rio Verde Country Club look to continue their fundraising efforts with Arnie’s Army - the club has already penciled in March 1 as the date for its next tournament in 2010.
The Arnie’s Army program was designed by the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) to help organizers and participants use golf as a fundraising tool to raise money for better treatments and a cure for prostate cancer. All proceeds raised by Arnie’s Army tournaments go directly to the PCF.
