Family Perspective: Adrian Smith

Not wanting to alarm his wife, Adrian, Bobby didn’t initially tell her the news of his prostate cancer diagnosis.  It was only until he gathered more information about the disease and possible treatment options, that he finally notifed her of his condition.

“It was definitely surprising when I found out Bobby had prostate cancer,” says Adrian. “My main concern was making sure he had the support he needed, and that he’d pull through okay.”

After first processing the shocking news, Adrian began to read details on the disease as she had little knowledge of prostate cancer herself.  She was particularly interested in learning more on the brachytherapy treatment (implantation of radiation seeds) her husband would be undergoing.

In addition to the knowledge they both obtained on prostate cancer from reading educational materials, Adrian credits Bobby’s male friends as being a source of comfort and support.

“Talking to men who had been in the same situation was just what Bobby needed,” says Adrian. “I couldn’t exactly put myself in his shoes, being a woman. So, having that male support was key. Life is wonderful now, and Bobby and I are trying to live life to its fullest.”
