Player Rep: Jason Bay

Jason BayJason Bay was traded midway through the 2008 season from the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Boston Red Sox on July 31, 2008. After being traded, Bay and the Sox won the 2008 American League Division Series against the Los Angeles Angels, but fell short to the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Championship Series. Bay started 48 of the 53 games that were left in the season, in which he finished with 31 home runs, 101 RBI, 111 runs, and 301 total bases.

Bay played on the Canadian team in the 2006 and 2009 World Baseball Classic. He also won the 2008 Chuck Tanner Award, which recognizes the players that are the most helpful, professional, and patient with the MLB writer’s and their daily responsibilities.

 

Player Rep: David Ortiz

David Ortiz joined the Red Sox in 2003. Nicknamed “Big Papi”, Ortiz has played in four All-Star Games and holds the Red Sox single-season record for home runs with 54 in 2007. Ortiz helped to lead the Red Sox to a World Series Championship in 2007. Ortiz captured an unprecedented five consecutive “Edgar Martinez Outstanding Designated Hitter Awards”, matching Martinez five honors as the American League’s top designated hitter. But, due to injuries, Ortiz had a frustrating 2008 season in which he played 108 games as the designated hitter, hit 23 home runs, had 89 RBI, and 70 walks. The 2008 season was also the first time that Ortiz did not play defense in a game. But, Ortiz is looking to come back strong for the 2009 season.

Ortiz wrote an autobiography, “Big Papi-My Story of Big Dreams and Big Hits” that made it to the New York Times Best Seller List in 2007.

Terry FranconaIn 2004, his first season as the manager, and again in 2007, Terry Francona led the Boston Red Sox to the World Series Championship.Francona was named the manager of the Boston Red Sox in 2004.On February 24, 2008, the Red Sox extended Francona’s contract to 2011.

As manager, Francona ended the 2008 season with a regular season career record of 755-703.Francona is the first manager in Major League Baseball history to win his first 8 games in the World Series.Francona and the Red Sox finished the 2008 season second in the American League East with a record of 95-67.
