Player Rep: Albert Pujols

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman, Albert Pujols is widely regarded as one of the best players in baseball today. Pujols ended the 2008 season by leading the team with a .357 batting average, 116 RBI, and 37 home runs. Pujols earned his second National League MVP award, was named Player of the Year by both MLPA Player’s Choice and The Sporting News, received the National League’s Silver Slugger Award for his performance at first base, and he earned the 2008 Roberto Clemente Award, which is given to the MVP for the team as well as the player that contributes the most to the community.

Pujols was also named the National League Oscar Charleston winner by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum as the most outstanding player in the National League, and was the team’s Triple Crown winner for the fourth straight season and the seventh time in 8 years.

Player Rep: Jason LaRue

St. Louis catcher, Jason LaRue is primarily known for his defensive ability. He was originally selected in the 5th round of the 1995 Major League draft by the Cincinnati Reds. He would debut for the Reds in 1999, becoming the team’s starting catcher. In 2005, with the Reds, LaRue would have his best overall season with 14 home runs, 60 RBI, and a .260 batting average.

On November 19, 2007, LaRue signed a one-year contract with the Cardinals as the backup catcher. With his great defensive ability, he signed with the Cardinals again following the 2008 season.

Tony La RussaTony La Russa will be entering his 13th season as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, and his 30th year as a manager in Major League Baseball.With every team that he has managed, La Russa has been the most successful manager in MLB history.As a manager of the Chicago White Sox from 1979 to 1986, he won the 1983 American League Manager of the Year after the White Sox won the American League West division.After the White Sox, he took over the managerial role of the Oakland A’s from 1986 to 1996.From 1988 to 1992, La Russa led the A’s to win four pennants, and the 1989 World Series Championship title against the San Francisco Giants.He was also awarded the American League Manager of the Year award in 1988 and 1992.

Then on October 23, 1995, La Russa was named the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals.In his first season with the Cardinals, La Russa led the team to win the National League’s Central title, which was repeated in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005.Also in 2002, La Russa won the award for National League Manager of the Year.Finally, in 2006, La Russa won the pennant for the National League and the World Series Championship against the Detroit Tigers.On October 22, 2007, La Russa extended his contract through the 2021 season.
