Player Rep: Jorge Cantu

The Florida Marlins added Jorge Cantu to the active roster on March 27, 2008. Cantu made a huge impression on the Marlins during spring training and he was named the team’s starting third baseman. On September 12, 2008, Cantu hit his 25th home run of the season.  Hanley Ramirez, Dan Uggla, and Mike Jacobs, and Cantu were the first group of infielders on the same team to have 25 or more home runs. Cantu finished the 2008 season with a career-high 29 home runs, 95 RBI, and a .277 batting average.

With Cantu’s impressive play during the 2008 season, the Marlins signed him to a 1-year contract extension and announced that they would shift him to first base.

Fredi GonzalezThe 2009 season will mark Fredi Gonzalez’s third season as the manager of the Florida Marlins. Gonzalez was named the Marlins manager on October 3, 2006, and this game marked his managerial debut at the Major League level. After the 2007 season, Gonzalez was named a coach for the 2007 National League All-Star Team. 

In the 2008 season, the Marlins finished third in the National league Eastern division with an 84-77 record. Gonzalez was named The 2008 Sporting News Manager of the Year.
