Thomas Guzzo, MD
University of Pennsylvania - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Dr. Guzzo received his BS from Ursinus College, a small but highly-selective liberal arts school specializing in pre-medicine, in Pennsylvania. He remained in Pennsylvania to earn his MD at Temple University School of Medicine, before heading to Maryland for his MPH from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is currently a clinical instructor of urology for the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute of Johns Hopkins University where he participates in the customary teaching and clinical responsibilities for surgical/urologic fellowship, including surgical treatment of patients and teaching of residents, fellows and staff physicians in operating rooms, on patient rounds and in the outpatient clinic.

Dr. Guzzo decided that he wanted to focus primarily on prostate cancer research because it is a prevalent cancer that affects so many men in the US and worldwide. “I am particularly interested in quality of life outcomes in men who undergo various prostate cancer treatments. Many current prostate cancer treatments have significant quality of life side-effects including impotence and incontinence. I am interested in clinical research aimed at minimizing the side-effects of prostate cancer treatment,” says Dr. Guzzo.

Dr. Guzzo has been the recipient of many awards in addition to the PCF Young Investigator Award. He received the Howard M. Pollack Award for Academic Excellence, which is awarded to the University of Pennsylvania urology resident with the highest score on the annual in-service exam, the Linda and Joel Appel Prostate Cancer Research Award, the Resident Achievement Award, for outstanding laparoendoscopic surgery, and the Outstanding Scholar in Urology Award. He is a reviewer for several editorials, such as the Journal of Urology and the British Journal of Urology.

He is a member of the American Urologic Association, the American College of Surgeons, and the Philadelphia Urologic Society. His work has appeared in more than 30 research publications, and in several other print and media outlets. Despite his busy schedule, Dr. Guzzo is also a practicing physician, and thoroughly enjoys the clinical care of his patients. He is also an avid sports fan, and enjoys fishing.
