Meet the Investigators

Thousands of men and women around the world are working on prostate cancer research projects. Meet some of these investigators here and discover the many novel ways in which they are trying to find a cure.

Dr. Gerhardt Attard
Dr. Gerhardt Attard’s research currently centers on identifying new biomakers that will help predict which patients might be successful (or unsuccessful) candidates for an experimental drug named abiraterone.

Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan
Recent findings out of the University of Michigan have linked metabolites to the occurrence of prostate cancer. This research, spearheaded by PCF-funded investigator, Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan, and his colleague Dr. Arun Sreekumar (currently of the Medical College of Georgia), may one day allow medical practitioners the ability to administer a simple urine test for detecting aggressive forms of prostate cancer.

Dr. Christopher Evans
The kinase Src has been shown to play an important role in the initiation and progression of prostate cancer.  PCF-funded investigator, Dr. Christopher Evans is currently studying whether the Src pathway is also critical to the survival and growth of prostate cancer cells and whether its overexpression results in the progression of hormone-therapy resistance in metastatic disease.

Dr. Daniel Haber
Daniel Haber is the director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center and the Laurel Isselbacher/Schwartz Chair of Oncology at Harvard Medical School. He is also a PCF-funded investigator working in the area of progression biomarkers.

Dr. Matthew Smith
Men receiving androgen deprivation therapy for prostate cancer may be at risk for osteoporosis and bone fractures. Recent published reports which highlight the work of PCF-funded researcher Dr. Matthew Smith have shown promising results in reducing this occurrence through the development of a promising new drug named denosumab.

Dr. Janet Stanford
In addition to genetics, social and environmental dynamics can also play a role in determining an individual’s risk for prostate cancer. As the principal investigator of large population-based case-control studies, cancer epidemiologist Dr. Janet Stanford focuses on evaluating how these environmental and lifestyle factors may affect disease risk, progression/recurrence and prostate cancer-specific mortality.

Dr. Muneesh Tewari
Based in Seattle, Washington - microRNA expert, Dr. Muneesh Tewari currently heads a laboratory of scientists at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. He and his team of investigators are studying the role of microRNA and its connection to cancer. Dr. Tewari works in an environment where a number of PCF-funded researchers reside and this has created a situation ideal for advancing his microRNA discovery research in the prostate cancer field.

Dr. Srinivasan Yegnasubramanian
Regulating gene activity may allow scientists to turn on good genes and stop bad ones when it comes to controlling cancer. PCF-funded researcher, Dr. Srinivasan Yegnasubramanian, performs innovative research in the field of epigenetics, focusing on regulation of gene activity that may lead to new biomarkers and treatments.
