On the Frontlines of Research: Attacking the Genetics of Devastating Prostate Cancer
The PCF-led war on prostate cancer is a multipronged effort — and thanks to dedicated friends like you, we're gaining ground rapidly on many fronts.
One of the most promising areas of research is the field of genetics.
John Carpten, PhD, is a PCF-backed molecular geneticist leading a team in Phoenix. They are studying genetic susceptibility as it relates to prostate cancer. By pinpointing inherent traits that help determine how severe a man's prostate cancer is likely to be — well before it reaches that deadly stage — they hope to stop it from getting there in the first place.
Research That Could Save Lives
One of the major challenges of prostate cancer is the sheer number of variations of the disease. Some are benign, others are deadly.
But the level of severity — and thus, the best treatment — is not always evident until the disease has progressed dangerously. That's why Dr. Carpten’s research — which focuses on genetically identifying and then treating the most severe forms of prostate cancer — is so critical. It will give doctors a priceless "head start" in providing patients with the best treatment possible.
PCF Funding is Crucial
Despite the incredible lifesaving potential of this study, it might never have seen the light of day if not for the PCF. With federal government funding decreasing, Dr. Carpten says the PCF “allowed me to continue and keep my prostate cancer research moving forward.”
Thank you for helping the PCF
fund Dr. John Carpten's lifesaving research. Together, we WILL win the fight against prostate cancer.
