The Prostate Cancer Foundation Announces 2004 Coffey Award Recipients at 11th Annual Scientific Retreat
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Oct. 25 -- The Prostate Cancer Foundation today announced the recipients of the 2004 Donald S. Coffey-Prostate Cancer Foundation Physician-Scientist Awards during its 11th annual Scientific Retreat in Lake Tahoe, NV. The Donald Coffey-Prostate Cancer Foundation Physician-Scientist Awards are designed to honor Dr. Coffey's decades-long commitment to prostate cancer research and his recognition of the important role physician-scientists play in research. The four awardees were chosen for their compassionate and expert care of prostate cancer patients and excellent laboratory research that moved the field forward in a significant way. The PCF recognizes the role that Dr. Coffey and the four awardees have played in improving the lives of all men affected by prostate cancer.
This year's award recipients are:
Angelo M. DeMarzo, M.D., Ph.D. is an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. DeMarzo is being acknowledged for his outstanding contribution to the discovery that inflammation may cause the initiation of prostate cancer.
Martin E. Gleave, M.D., is the Chief Scientific Officer at OncoGenex. Dr. Gleave is a leading cell biologist and has defined a molecule called Clustrin as a target for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.
Christopher Rose, M.D., FACR, is a board certified Radiation Oncologist practicing at Providence St. Joseph's Medical Center in Burbank, CA. Dr. Rose is both the Technical and Associate Director of Valley Radiotherapy Associates Medical Group. Dr. Rose is a leading investigator for the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation and Oncology (ASTRO) which has lead to optimal radiation treatments for prostate cancer.
Howard I. Scher, M.D., is Chief of the Genitourinary Oncology Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering. Dr. Scher has led the effort in optimizing clinical research for recurrent prostate cancer.

Michelson, the Prostate Cancer Foundation's vice chairman and chief executive officer, commented, "Each year, the Foundation's Retreat gathers the country's leading researchers developing new therapies designed to treat and cure prostate cancer.
