Prostate Cancer Foundation Receives Record $5.1 Million From Safeway Customers
Annual in-store campaign raises funds for prostate cancer research
SANTA MONICA, Calif., – August 9, 2006 – Safeway, Inc., one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America, partnered with the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) for the sixth consecutive year to raise money for prostate cancer research and awareness. The campaign raised $5.1 million, surpassing the previous record of $4.4 million.
During the month of June, Steve Burd, Safeway’s president and chief executive officer, led a company-wide campaign that included point-of-purchase promotions at more than 15,000 checkout stands in all 1,770 Safeway stores and Safeway affiliate stores in the U.S., including Vons, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Pavilions, Genuardi’s, Carrs and Dominick’s. Since its inception in 2001, the campaign has raised more than $17.6 million.
Safeway shoppers donated to the PCF by adding to their grocery bill, purchasing a blue ribbon, and/or purchasing a Prostate Cancer Awareness bracelet. In addition, employees purchased campaign T-shirts and organized events such as parking lot barbecues and book sales.
Safeway raised awareness of prostate cancer through a range of channels including its weekly sales circular, radio advertisements, milk carton imprints and store signage. In addition, 550 Safeway store pharmacies joined the campaign by conducting prostate cancer screenings to promote early detection of the disease.
“By tapping into the generosity of its shoppers and employees to generate support for this vital cause that touches everyone, Safeway has once again demonstrated that it is a model corporate citizen,” said Leslie D. Michelson, chief executive officer of the PCF.
Laree Renda, Safeway’s executive vice president, praised the rallying support of employees and customers during the campaign for prostate cancer research. “Each year, we find new ways to get the message in front of our customers and their families,” Renda said. “This new record and dollar amount tells us the cause hits home and that our awareness-raising activities are having an impact.”
